VMware Workstation Pro 15] 11. Taking Snapshots of Virtual Machines

Hello, guys. You will figure out how to take snapshots of virtual machines (VM) in this post. When you finish this practice, you will be able to take planned snapshots for various tests.

What is Snapshot?

Snapshot is a technology for storing the current state of a virtual machine. Snapshots can be created for both states in run and shutdown. You can then revert your VM to the specific point of snapshot repeatedly. It is very useful for doing some tests repeatedly or leaving a series of tasks. Snapshot-related files are stored in the location of a VM.

Snapshot Processes

You can take a snapshot whenever you need it, but you'd better take it with a plan. If you want to keep records of the point in time during a series of test, it's a good idea to take snapshots in a linear process.

If you want to test by software version, it is recommended to take snapshots in a tree process.

A snapshot can be taken for a working VM, but are recommended taking a snapshot after a normal shutdown. If you take a snapshot for a running VM, the memory information of the VM is saved together. If the VM's memory allocated is large, the size of the snapshot file is also large. If you continue to take snapshots for running VMs, the file system will be full in no time. And remember that the number of snapshots affects virtual machine speed.

Managing Snapshots

Creating a snapshot

When you click the Take a snapshot of this virtual machine icon in the toolbar to take a snapshot of the current time point, the window below appears: After entering a name and description, press the Take Snapshot button to save the snapshot information.

Reverting to the most recent snapshot

When you click the Revert this virtual machine snapshot icon in the toolbar, revert a VM to the most recent snapshot.

Managing snapshots

You can use the snapshot manager to remove created snapshots that are taken or to modify names and descriptions.

If you want to revert to a specific point in time, select the snapshot and click the Go To button. And you can modify the name or the description of the snapshot. If you want to remove a specific snapshot, select a snapshot and click the Delete button. If you want to take a snapshot at this point, you are here, click the Take Snapshot button.

You have acquired the skill to manage snapshots. I encourage you to practice a few more times to become proficient. Do not forget to take snapshots when doing important tests. It is a useful feature that can shorten your testing time. See you next. Thank you.
