VMware Workstation Pro 15] 13. Exporting/Importing Virtual Machines to Open Virtualization Format (OVF)

Hello, guys. You will figure out how to export and import virtual machines (VMs) in this post. When you finish this practice, you will be able to save your time for preparing your test environment.

What is Open Virtualization Format (OVF)

OVF is an open standard for packaging virtual machines. This provides a way to deploy your virtual machine to the same or different platforms. Imagine how to would distribute your software to others. You will package and distribute what you've created to make it easy for people to use. The virtual machine consists of files. So you can see the distribution method is similar.

Exporting/Importing Virtual Machines to OVF Format

Exporting Virtual Machines to OVF Format

Exporting a virtual machine is easy. First, select the target virtual machine in the library and shutdown gracefully. Then select File > Export to OVF from the menu bar. Enter a file name and click the Save button to start the OVF export task.

The extension can be set to ovf or ova. ovf is exported to several files and ova is exported as a single file. I personally prefer to export to a single file.

Importing Virtual Machines from OVF Format

Importing a virtual machine is so easy. A few clicks are enough to do this. select File > Open from the menu bar. Then select the OVF file you just exported and click the Open button to import.

Enter the virtual machine name to use in VMware Workstation Pro 15.

Please wait a minute and you will be able to see the imported virtual machine.

You have acquired the skill to export and import virtual machines. I encourage you to practice a few more times to become proficient. Save your valuable time by using this feature. See you next. Thank you.
